My book club picked this book and once I started reading it, I couldn’t put it down. Excellent story with realistic characters that grab your interest from the beginning.

I am struck by the number of reviews based mostly in regard to dialect in this book. WhenI first heard KS interviewed on NPR about this book, she said that was the hardest part, “to capture the voice of the character.”

One thing I am particularly interested in is how KS captured they way each character “heard” and “said” the dialect of other characters. The way Skeeter demonstrates Minny is different from the way Aibileen demonstrates Minny. I also think it’s funny how Minny demonstrates Hilly Holbrook compared to the way Aibileen does. It’s a character development tool, and a clever one.

While, I too, would have expected a few more verbs ending in -in’ and not -ing, I do think that Minny & Aibileen using verbs ending in “-ing” to characterize the white women in their lives only drives home their view of those ladies, whether it’s Skeeter, Hilly or Celia (who had a different twang altogether).

While I have read this book, I fully recommend the audio version of this book. It reveals some different levels that I think are missed in a simple read.

Cosmetic Train Case in

I find this VERY easy to use and clean. I like that it keeps the water heated and has rotating brushes that get all around the carpet fibers. I have used it monthly to clean a carpet used by 2 Golden Retrievers, my husband (who never takes his shoes off until bedtime) and myself. It is getting the old worn areas clean. The machine is easy to operate and it’s very easy to see when the water is going down and the dirty water tank is about ready to come out. It notifies you by changing the suction and raising a yellow ball on the dirty water tank that it’s ready to get dumped. See through tanks make it easy to see how much dirt you are lifting out of your carpet. Suction is good and leaves carpet only slightly damp.

This is my second iPod Touch. I owned a 1G iPod Touch which went through the washing machine and came out very clean but non functional.

I use this mainly for reading books using Stanza. It will hold a lot of them. 64GB is a crazy amount of space. I fit my entire music collection, all my pictures and still had room left over. Lately I’ve cut back my music to what I really like, and I’m ripping my DVD collection into MP4’s and loading them onto this device.

Recently I spent 12 days sailing on the ocean and this was my book reader, music player, and video player. It is just about all you need in a slender package.

In the past I used those rubber covers. I liked that they would stick and hold this in position when I put it down. However, they did not hold up. Now I use it without a cover, and I’ve dedicated my front left pocket to this device alone–to prevent scratches.

There are lots of aps out there. I like Things, and Stanza the most. It is good for games, but why waste your time with that when you could be reading. The only game I play any more is Sudoku–because it puts me to sleep at night.

Battery life is good. I adjust the brightest to the lowest usable setting. Most times I use it at night, so it lasts a real long time for me. I have an external battery made by Griffin for long plane rides. I find I don’t use that much. It is better to carry along a charger and an extension cord, and plug in before you get on a plane–while waiting. When I do that I don’t seem to need the external battery.

It is a library in your pocket for music, books, and videos.

Cons:

It is wifi only. I’ve found that most places I go to often offer Wifi-so I can check my email and web browse.

As a web browser, it works, but not very well. You constantly spend your time resizing things so you can read them, and the contracting them to see the whole page again.

Price? Maybe, I feel it is well worth the price. Apple products are products done right.

Probably because of how stupid it is. It’s been years since I read it, but I can sum it up for you. It follows the experiences of a spoiled rotten dumbass rich kid with no drive, no motivation, no goals, no self respect. Why? Because he’s never worked a day in his life and expects the world to feel sorry for him because he has teenage angst. This kid could be considered the orginal emo without the make up. Yeah he shows signs of schitzophreina, but that really doesn’t make him more compelling or pitful. Bottom line, this is the saga of a self centered little bastard incapable of feeling any emotion for anyone save perhaps his little sister. It’s not timeless, the story teaches nothing, but creates a model of an idiot. I’ll say this though, if you are a parent and you’re kid turns out like this kid, you have failed as a parent. Mabye that’s the point of the book, but I doubt it.

The book is overhyped by the hippie crowd because they can relate to the character. As in they’re spoiled rotten rich little idiots who have never worked a day in their life and are looking for hand outs. That’s the description of the main character and the synopisis of the book. This is probably why the book has been banned so much, because it’s an insipid self centered, apathetic mockery of the human experience. A guide to living for the weak minded so called elite masses.
